Ottawa Fibre Artist LYNNE MORIN brings her art savvy to Kingston in November - please join us!

Sunflowers, Fibre and Paint on Canvas, Lynne Morin
Fall is fast approaching and our thoughts immediately go to hours in the slower days when ART will once again take a front row seat in our studios! FIBREWORKS is so pleased that well known Canadian artist, LYNNE MORIN of Ottawa will be joining us for Workshop #2 in our Fall Design Series!

Lynne's work has been shown in numerous Canadian as well as international galleries... solo exhibitions, SAQA Traveling Exhibits, our own Central Canada SAQA sponsored SYNTHESIS I and SYNTHESIS II Shows that have traveled Ontario for a number of years and more.

Over the past few years, Lynne has begun to use her talents as a painter to bring a whole new dimension to her work with textile and fibre. Her new works combine the subtle beauty and magic of laying texture, colour and dimension to a canvas, all the while adding the familiar and thought provoking use of fabrics and fibres in the mix. There are special tips and techniques involved when mixing these two mediums, and Lynne has developed this very special Weekend Workshop just for those who are willing to step out and try an all new approach to their work!

Sunflowers II, Lynne Morin

While "Sunflowers" are a focus in new work for Lynne's fall sharing as she travels, speaks and shares her love of paint and fibre, students who join Lynne for her November 7-9th Workshop "THE SAME, BUT DIFFERENT" at St. Lawrence College will gain so much more than time to play with paints and fibre/textile.

SO WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO JOIN US???

* Students who take this course will explore methodologies for approaching and achieving a series of new artworks, either representational or abstract in design, and hear how Lynne approaches successfully creating works of art that are suitable for galleries or art shows.

* The focus will be on the creating of related works...and please know that Lynne will ensure that the “how” is the important part of this course.

* Several shared methods in the course will provide a solid base for further creating art work.... and having the opportunity to use these techniques several times over the workshop weekend will provide the experience necessary to gain the confidence to successfully create more in the future.

* Students will also learn how to critique works of art, especially their own, before, during and after completion of their works.

* Lynne will also share her focused compositional strategies. As a recognized Gallery and Installation artist, Lynne has built a strong foundation for her many series of new work. She will share her tried and tested steps she has proven can work for you.

If YOU are ready to take a new path this year, to share in the steps to success that this well known Instructor and Exhibition Artist has taken to ensure her work is Gallery-ready... and want to have some serious fun along the way, please REGISTER for Workshop #2 with Lynne and get ready to create some terrific new work!

The Registration form is on the right sidebar at the www.fibreworkskingston.blogspot.ca blog.... and Lynne's workshop is filling nicely.... COME JOIN US!

Summer is passing quickly now... time to mark your calendar for upcoming FIBREWORKS Fall workshops!

"WRAP AND RUST DYEING" workshop with MAGGIE VANDERWEIT
launches the fall 2014 Workshops Weekend Series
September 19-21, 2014.

As July comes to a close, we are all anticipating the changes in schedule that come with approaching fall days. August will give us all the time to plan and consider the opportunities we will want to include in our artistic lives... and we hope you will consider joining us for the terrific and awe inspiring weekend with Maggie. Known for her beautiful compositions in cloth and stitch, Maggie brings to Kingston and area her new passion... NATURAL DYE WORK.

Sharing the techniques she has learned to love, and which have resulted in some truly beautiful cloth that she shares in her booth at Creativ Festival in Toronto and beyond, Maggie will guide you on an adventure using common plant materials, mordants and either heat or steam to move colour and stunning marks from the materials collected for use in the workshop weekend onto your cloth. Having the opportunity to add these skills to your inventory of favourite techniques is an opportunity you will NOT want to miss. FOUR SEATS are available to our final registrants in Maggie's workshop weekend - so please don't wait and be disappointed.

More information:

Maggie's beautiful work brings to life the many wonderful bits and pieces of nature that are currently adorning your gardens and the countryside near your home. Utilizing sound and proven methods for transferring the gorgeous colour locked inside the leaves, plant material and flowers we know and love, Maggie will share her favourite techniques for teasing the colour onto cloth using mordants and heat/steeping to bring forward the marks left by metal, twigs, plant material and more. The resulting cloth is beautiful, and calls for stitching, framing and treasured coveting.

The 7-9 pm evening Lecture and sharing of new work with Maggie will be at St. Lawrence College in Kingston, with the two workshop days at the Odessa Fairgrounds Hall.  Hope to hear that YOU will join us for both!

Emerging From Chaos, Lynne Morin

LYNNE MORIN,  joins us the weekend of November 7-9th
to share "THE SAME, but DIFFERENT" two-day workshop.

Lynne, an outstanding designer, arts coach and much loved artist from Ottawa, will share her talk and new work with students and guests at St. Lawrence College on Friday evening November 7th.

This is the opportunity YOU need to help move those ideas, plans and sketches from paper to all new original work. Lynne is a master designer and beloved for her calm demeanor and wise advise that has encouraged friends in the art world to take the steps they need to move their work off the design wall and into the world of exhibition and sales. While that is not a goal for every artist, with Lynne's encouragement and support, you will begin to formulate the plans/sketches to create NEW and exciting pieces that will be stepping stones to a new series or even a whole new collection of ideas to work though in 2015.

REGISTRATION is OPEN.... so check out the details of our workshops for 2014/15 on the sidebar to the right side of the blog.

Contact Registrar, Bethany Garner, for a pdf copy of the FIBREWORKS brochure and share with friends. Everyone welcome. Local accommodation information is available from Bethany... come join us!

FIBREWORKS is growing and changing as we approach our 2014/15 Weekend Workshops Series announcements.... hoping YOU will tune in often here at the blog and plan to join us for one or all of our outstanding workshop weekends...

Greetings to all of our friends and visitors here at the FIBREWORKS KINGSTON blog. Hope your summer is going a bit better than mine... unexpected events and surprises happen. (Actually my injury is fine, allowing me time now to read, just enjoy my surroundings and share some quality visits with friends and family ...and slowly one-handed type announcements for this blog!)

Bethany enjoying time with KFA Friends in June, fractured wrist and all

The best part of summer is free time to work on the planning for our FIBREWORKS Series for 2014/15 and have the chance to network with  the very best and most talented Instructors in Ontario and beyond as I plan for our next year together.

You will notice if you visit our Registration Pages that FIBREWORKS KINGSTON is now a division of my 10 year old textiles and workshops presentation business, HERITAGE QUILTWORKS CANADA.

For many years, FIBREWORKS was so beautifully presented by our mentor and dear friend, Hilary Scanlon. It was always my goal and commitment as I assisted Hilary as her Associate Coordinator from 1996-2008 to strive to continue her dream. Two years ago, Hilary retired and passed the candle for continuing Fibreworks to me... and with several friends and former associates of Hilary's, we tried a "committee approach" to working with the business of running Fibreworks. With everyone very busy with their own arts studies, groups and commitment to quality personal lives, it just seemed best that Fibreworks return to an owner operated business for Administrative purposes.

The original Fibreworks Kingston mission continues: "To promote fibre as an Art Form". Our Instructors are professional designers and well-known craftspersons who skillfully share their well-honed techniques and knowledge. Participants in FIBREWORKS Workshops are professional teachers, and interested craftspersons, or amateurs wishing to learn and share together for further stimulation and knowledge.  I will always seek the very best of the best Instructors for our FW line-up, with the goal of staying in tune with our students' needs and wishes.

Fibreworks is a huge family - made up of students from now almost 35 years of enjoying together the opportunity to learn and grow together. I so hope you will join us once again this new season as Fibreworks Kingston merges with Heritage Quiltworks Canada to bring high quality, skills/knowledge based workshops not only those interested in art quilts and contemporary design, but to needle arts enthusiasts in many disciplines including traditional quilting, embroidery, felt work, painting and mixed media art work and more. Your suggestions are always welcome!

We will be enjoying workshops throughout the year, announced here at the blog and in associated social media and newsletter ads with local Groups, Guilds and Associations. Keep a watchful eye as Heritage Quiltworks and Fibreworks Kingston grow to benefit our needle arts enthusiasts in Southeastern Ontario and beyond. Please share the news and bring friends along for the great workshops.

I am pleased to announce here today the line up for our 2014-15 Fibreworks Kingston Weekend Workshops Series, and ask your patience as I prepare and post the individual class descriptions and details (one-handed typing takes SO long). Please visit the blog often for the "Pages" on the right sidebar here for each of the four workshops being announced here today.  FW 2014/15 Registration will officially open June 15, 2014 - Please mark your calendars!! Watch for me to post a pdf copy of the Fibreworks brochure here at the blog... it will be available here for you soon.

(You may also contact me at fibreworkskingston@gmail.com  for a mailed/shared copy after the blog posting of the brochure)

Here are a few more inspirational pictures of Maggie's Art Cloth:

And some important information about Maggie and her work from her website:

Maggie is an active Artist Member of SAQA, CQA, CONNECTIONS Fibre Artists, CFUW Guelph Textile Art Group, and the Harris Artist's Collective. She offers inspirational lectures, trunk shows and classes to guilds, schools, colleges, art classes, retreats, quilt shops, private groups and international needlework shows and quilting conferences.

Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world and is in international and national private collections. She has won numerous awards, including two first place prizes in the CQA National Juried Quilt Show, one for her machine quilting for “Stone Weather”, and one for her piecing in “Fire in the Cabin - PMS and the Full Moon”. In 2013 she was honoured with the Canadian Quilting Association's Excellence in Innovation Award for "Bedolina Threads", a Threadworks Juror's Award for "Blue is the Colour of My Soul", and an Insights Purchase Award for "Unchained". Maggie has sold/sells her original textile art from her studio, galleries, museums, during the Elora-Fergus Studio Tour, Fair November, Creativ Festival, Silo Weavery, and the One of a Kind Show. She also sells her own photo greeting cards, hand-painted fabrics and threads and creates commissioned pieces for public and personal spaces.

Maggie is influenced and provoked to create by literature, good conversation, radio, colour, line, texture, her beliefs and private musings. She draws inspiration from the natural beauty of the farmlands, rolling hills, gardens and woods around her. She works with many different materials and techniques - from traditional pieced patchwork to intuitive abstract painting and depictions of political and personal events. She is probably best known for the hand-painted fabric she pieces in original and simple patterns, and then densely quilts in intricate, contemporary free-motion designs with her domestic sewing machine. She also spends her days doing spontaneous handwork: beading, embroidering, wet felting, embellishing, eco-dyeing, faux encaustic and painting. She often works in a series, but every piece emerges completely unique. Her desire is to create spiritually meaningful textile art, and she believes that every creative act requires faith and optimism.
