MARBLING BASICS – A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO MARBLING FABRIC

Marbling has always been a bit of a mystery for those who love to create original cloth. Join fibre artist Bethany Garner, as she shares how to create amazing cloth in a clean, safe and fun-filled environment!

In this popular workshop, you will have the opportunity to explore easy to use marbling paints from PEBEO, a renowned paint developer for the textile arts in France. You will work by layering the paints, using pipettes or eye droppers onto the surface of a pre-mixed, thickened delivery system in a shallow pan. Plus, you will leave with the knowledge to create your own marbling set-up at home.

The real MAGIC begins as you layer on pre-cut white, black, or coloured fabrics, or papers of your choice. You may choose to experiment with silk, satin, corduroy, denim, velveteen and more.

The results are always beautiful, and can be used in art quilts, journal covers, framed art, and if large enough garments and home décor. This class will be samples focused and follow-up instruction is always available.

* Dye materials included in class fee.

* A comprehensive workshop handout is provided.

* Please bring your own papers (Japanese papers, Mulberry paper and watercolour paper are great).

* Please bring your own cloth (silk, cotton, satin).

* Please bring a large container to take home wet papers/fabrics.

** You can also purchase pre-made paper and cloth kits for $10-$15 cash during the class.

INSTRUCTOR - Bethany Garner

Bethany Garner has been designing and making quilts since 1976. She is a seasoned contemporary artist, traditional quilter, Restoration Specialist, Quilt Conservator, and is a Professor of Textile Design at St. Lawrence College, Kingston. She has inspired her students to take chances, try new things, and explore their favourite techniques in the classroom and at home.

Bethany has been sharing her favourite techniques in the classrooms since 1996, and brings her students a number of mixed-media, and cloth based colouring workshops based on the application of easy to use Procion MX Dyes, acrylic paints, inks, and silk paints for cloth, fibres and threads.Bethany’s courses are technique based, fun and developed to ensure that every student is accepted and feels included, supported and making their way forward on their own creative path.

Bethany served as a member and Board Secretary for the Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning from 2015 to 2018. She is a Past Co-President of the Kingston Handloom Weavers and Spinners and is a member of the Kingston Fibre and Fabric Cooperative, the Ottawa Valley Weavers and Spinners Guild and the Ontario Handweavers and Spinners. She is a past president of the Canadian Quilters Association/ACC and was honoured as the CQA/ACC Teacher of the Year in 2011.

Bethany has recently served Studio Art Quilt Associates, an International Art Quilts organization with 3400 members worldwide and has served as their Central Canada Regional Representative. Beth was selected as Curator for the first major SAQA Exhibition coming to Canada, and she is active within the Surface Design Association. She also enjoys her active membership with both the Kingston Fibre Artists, Quinte Fibre Artists and CONNECTIONS Fibre Artists groups in Ontario. She exhibits her work across Canada and the US, often in gallery settings and with group/Association exhibitions.

Her work is in private and corporate collections across Canada and the US. She enjoys sharing her work in group and solo exhibitions when opportunities present.

Bethany travels and teaches for Quilt Guilds, shops and women's groups by invitation. She is the Owner and Managing Co-ordinator for the FIBREWORKS KINGSTON Weekend Workshops Series which has brought the very best of the best Fibre Arts Educators to Canada since 1979.

We are each presenting beautiful and useful items that started as an idea and have evolved into tangible, carefully and thoughtfully created and sought after treasures. You will find hand spun, woven, knit, hand and machine-stitcheditems and MORE! all created with love...wearables, home decor, wall art and small and large gifts for all ages, ...something for everyone. 

The variety and quality of the artist's offerings will give you the chance to choose special gifts for friends, family or yourself, and knowing that each has been crafted by a committed artist in fibre and fabric will be the best part of your visit! Always being able to chat and get to know the makers personally is a terrific opportunity, and this group of fast friends will make you smile! Come see for yourself!

Do bring a few friends or your family! Everyone welcome...and the Kingston waterfront is truly beautiful this time of year. The view from the upstairs KYC display room providest a beautiful vista for you to enjoy as you have a look up and down the St. Lawrence along the east end of Lake Ontario as you move among the table displays and enjoy a great chat with the Fibre Artists friends. 

Parking is available on Maitland near the Yacht Club, and you may choose to park a block or two away and enjoy a walk through City Park and down two short blocks to the Yacht Club. Entry is through the main level doors and up the stairs , or choose to join us via the outside starirs which open directly into the Sale Room! (FYI: The Yacht Club is not wheelchair accessible.)

You might plan to see if you can slip downstairs and purchase a light lunch  in the KYC dining room as you visit our 1st Annual VIBRANT Sale...enjoy!

DYE DAY COMING AT Odessa Fairgrounds Hall and all of our fibre friends as well as our weaving friends are welcome to join in on the fun!

Fibre Reactive Dyes are so much fun to play with, and when I recently shared a 'Play Days Retreat' with a few friends here at Odessa, the students said "DO LET ME KNOW" when another day that is devoted to dye play is available and I would love to come out!

Well, the date is set in my calendar and I invite you to join me and bring several friends who LOVE colour on cloth!

Welcome to Quilters and Fibre Arts Enthusiasts

 YOU are invited to join me and spend a full day dyeing cotton, linen, rayon, silk or other cellulose fabrics of your choice.

and  YES, 

 For our friends who are Weavers!

YOU can prepare and bring your pre-skeined cotton, linen 

or silk yarns 

for dye painting or immersion dyeing,

and/or several pre-wound warps for dye-painting.

 I will have 15 glorious colours of  Procion Fibre Reactive Dyes all prepared and ready for your use and sharing all through the day

SUPPLIES LIST - please plan to bring

The Odessa Hall FLOORS WILL BE TARPED 

* Pre-washed fabrics and/or yarns that are ready for dyeing

*FLAT DYEING Projects require thin, roll plastic for laying between the layers of fabrics that you can dye in this one day (8 - 10 half metres by the width of fabric are normal in the day!)

* You will need to bring plastic table cover and old towels to catch drips UNDER your table

*Paint brushes if dyeing warps ( I use foam brushes)

*Gloves and wipe up towels or paper towels

*A container or bin (something to take the wet fabrics home in)

* Beer Cups or small containers to hold your dyes

* For flat dyeing, a slanted paint brush (dollar store) is great for working out the air bubbles between layers of plastic and your fabrics as you build one layer after another or painted fabrics

* NOTES:

** You can dye so much more than fabrics and yarns - paper, a shirt or blouse, dye paint a jacket or dye paint some tea towels or other home décor items at your table (no immersion dyeing this time)

** Bring a few poles that have been string wrapped for shibori or fold some fabrics and prepare them for clamped paint work with dyes from small flat containers at your table. 

** You will need a bucket or other container for transporting wet fabrics home in, as they will all require batching for 24-48 hours after the workshop day before rinsing and wash out!

** Wear old clothes and bring your LUNCH. Coffee, tea and water provided and a few treats for the sweets/chocolate lovers!

Wednesday - Friday, September 12-14, 2018

DAY ONE: Creating hand painted backgrounds and adding some amazing texture through the use of heat deconstructed non-wovens (PELLON 830) allows the artist to create patterns in textured fabric that will bring all new dimension to the artwork!

Daye one of the Cabin Fever Retreat September 12-14th will find us playing with this technique. Painted silk and non-wovens during the morning and heat distressed work in the afternoon. Stitching will be done at home by the artists or at Odessa if they are coming back for Days Two and Three of the retreat!

By this time next week we will be dyeing INDIO at the Odessa Fairgrounds and I will have had a great day of silk painting and the heat distressing of non-woven fabrics that will lead the workshop participants on a totally new adventure with their artwork moving forward!

DAY TWO: INDIGO - FOR THE LOVE OF BLUE...

Participating artists will have a full ay to wrap poles for Arashi Shibori, explore shibori folded techniques and stitched designs as they relax and await the Indigo Vat development. Class begins with readying the four vats and preparing they 100% white cotton, linen, ramie, rayon or silk for immersion in the dye vats.

No experience is required - just enthusiasm for the dye process and a willingness to work as a part of a team to develop an orchestrated and times entry and removal process for oxidizing the cloth during the process. SO much fun and the colour is brilliant. Students will take home their dyed cloth for 24 hour minimum batching and the rinse out after that 24-hour waiting period.

Cannot tell you how much fun this process is and once you start, you will never be without indigo in your design and colour play inventory again. Easy, fast and you will love adding this to your skills base and bringing this process forward in your dye explorations at home. 

DAY THREE:  IMPROV PIECING- developing a landscape quilt to love and repeat over and over in your arts practice

Pulling together and bringing a supply of stash fabrics that remind you of a favourite place you have visited, a sea side or woods inspired view that sticks in your memory or inspired by a favourite photograph, this class will offer the students a chance to come together as fall approaches and spend a day with Bethany and a few new friends creating a quilt that sings about 

FUN TO DESIGN,  EASY to SEW and QUICK TO BUILD using a muslin base and either cut or torn strips of fabric to build a free-form design that will be sewn using just a straight stitch. Use batiks, flat dyes, prints or solids, yarns and ribbons, and build on a creative map to a result that will remind you of that special day or place or photograph that sticks in your mind and draws you to create art.

Bethany will share her own 'best practice' methods for quickly laying out a design "map" on large-scale graph paper or starting out just "knowing' intuitively which piece to pick up from a pile of strips and add to another to bring a story to life in fabric. 

The day will go quickly as the designs are mapped out at the start of morning, with layering and stitch throughout the later morning and afternoon.

Bethany has muslin available for you at $6 a metre if that helps, and all you need is your sewing machine and accessories, a long extension cord, fabrics, threads and scissors/pins.
