The Retreat Weekend offers 9:30-5 pm instruction/support each day . The workshop will be held at the Odessa Fairgrounds Hall. Students joining Bethany will have a chance to either “do their own thing” with their own projects and guidance/assistance from Bethany, a seasoned fibre artist and Instructor in the Textile Design Program at St. Lawrence College…. OR take part in the three separate “play day” activities Beth has planned…

Saturday, February 22nd is “FLAT DYEING" - a great way to dye fabric and YES it can be done very safely and with terrific results indoors with some care to manage your work site and carry wet fabrics home in a large container for rinsing at a later date
Sunday, February 23rd is “SCREEN PRINTING with Thickened Dyes”. Beth will demo torn paper, resist based work and free form "deconstructed" screen work. Students would need to have a 10" x 14" screen prepared with taped edges and a squeegee for the workshop.

Take advantage of all three days Feb. 21-23rd for a special $120.00 or choose one or two days if that works better for you and the projects are of interest. Each single day is $50.00  if you can only do one.  A nice selection of prepared dyes will be provided.   Supplies lists with paid registration.

Please plan to bring Brown Bag lunch. Coffee, tea and break snacks provided. Registration is limited to sixteen students each day to allow for individual work station space.

Karen Goetziner workshop a resounding success!!

Sixteen students and the Fibreworks team gathered at St. Lawrence for a wonderful two day workshop with KAREN GOETZINGER over the weekend of November 15-17th.

After a terrific Friday evening Lecture and the sharing of many beautiful pieces of Karen's new work, students met Karen in the classroom on Saturday morning to begin their studies, the planned refreshing of their knowledge and some fun filled experimentation using COLOUR as inspiration. Many small exercises were completed in sketch books as seen below in the class photo at the end of the day, Sunday November 17th.

Karen and her students, FW Nov. 2103

Sandra Smith and Wilma Kenny share inspiration and conversations about colour
Students kept busy building on the suggested colour studies laid out by Karen and chose projects along the way that met their personal as well as learning objectives. The many shared student conversations and walk-abouts in the classroom, supported by personal one on one consultations with our very knowledgeable and experienced Studio Artist Instructor, meant that lots of new work in the planning and experimentation stages, including the laying of hand stitches, was happening throughout the classroom.

Many lessons with COLOUR AID papers (cool family)

The Warm colours as the day progressed
Making notations in the sketchbooks to inspire further work and inspire the students to USE COLOUR in all new ways was the focus for the weekend. Supportive tips and many ideas for small, learning exercises using fabric and fibres after returning home after the workshop will support the new work students participating in this workshop will begin as time permits. Several students actually had work underway that will lead to finished pieces in the near future, while others just relaxed and enjoyed the journey of playing with colour.

Special Thanks to Karen and all of our students for an outstanding workshop weekend.

FALL FW WORKSHOP WEEKENDS conclude:

Happy Holidays everyone and we are hoping YOU will consider joining us for a future FIBREWORKS KINGSTON weekend and experience the opportunity to network with like minded artist friends and enjoy the vast experience brought to us by our multi-talented Instructors.

We still have a couple of seats available in WORKSHOP #5 with PENNY BERENS, coming from Nova Scotia to share her MAKE IT YOUR OWN WITH DISCHARGE colour and techniques focused workshop May 20/21st, 2014. Thanks for a great Weekend Workshop to Pamela Allen and friends

Great students and a wonderful Instructor, Pam Allen

Our October 18-20th weekend started with a terrific evening with Pamela Allen and her "TOWNSCAPE Quilts". Stories of making art, sharing art worldwide and Pam had a lot of encouraging words to those who would spend a fun-filled weekend with her creating new small pieces to inspire creative fall and winter work.

Many playful and inspired pieces ended up on the wall and it was certainly a wonderful opportunity to network with great friends both old and new, and share in the creative process. Pam offered hugely important critique and suggestions along the way and provided a great set of handouts to move us through two great days of design play. Many thanks to Pam...

Inspired works using great artist's snippets as a starting point for some new small art "masterpieces"...all terrific.

Creating all new fibre  images from piles of scraps and bits of inspiration in Pam's handouts and under her guidance was fun. A great starting point for many small workshop samples and strong design notes. The walls were filled with free form cut outs - small pieces to stitch later and enjoy as references as design time filled the two days at St. Lawrence College.

Stretching in new directions and making work just flow off the tip of your scissors and onto a background can be challenging, but the results are always good fun. With a foundation in place for creating new fibre images that could reflect "your town", the goal of original work was met and the results speak for themselves. WE HAD FUN!

NOTES OF INTEREST:

* Hope to see many of you out for KAREN GOETZINGER'S Lecture and Slide Show on Friday evening November 15th at St. Lawrence College, 7 pm. Signage will point the way to the Lecture room.

Karen's workshop "Dynamic Colour for Fibre Artists" is filled, but we will do a follow-up post for you soon. Please follow Karen at her website and watch her calendar for more opportunities for studio studies/coaching.

* There are a very few seats available in CAROL SODERLUND's Workshop "TRANSFORMATIONS" for March 21-23, 2014 and for PENNY BEREN's "MAKE IT YOUR OWN WITH DISCHARGE" Workshop scheduled for May 20 and 21st, 2014.

Workshops are filling fast - ARE YOU JOINING US THIS SEASON?

We are thrilled to say that the lineup of courses for our 2013-2014 Weekend Workshops Series is proving to be hugely popular and know that YOU will want to be in the classroom with our Guest Instructors as they bring you the very best of the best techniques and inspiration here in Kingston, ON. Please don't wait to register...

NOTE: Penny Berens workshop: DESIGNING WITH NATURE is now filled, with many thanks to those who have reserved their seat. A wait list will be maintained in case of a cancellation, so please let us know of your interest.

MAY 20 and 21, 2014:
Discharge work has always been a bit of a mystery for most fibre artists and can be a bit off-putting when the fear of bleach fumes and using products that can be harmful are involved in the processes and techniques. Please know that the opportunity to study with a master fibre artist like PENNY BERENS can take the mystery and fear out of working to change the colour and preserve the integrity and hand of fabrics. The magical transformations of cloth when using the new colour removing techniques that Penny will share in her workshop MAKE IT YOUR OWN WITH DISCHARGE are exciting and easy to manage in our safe and well ventilated classroom setting.

Now is a great time to reserve your seat and not take the chance of missing this terrific two day workshop with Penny. She will be travelling to Kingston from Granville Ferry, Nova Scotia just to share her wealth of knowledge and years of practiced expertise with her workshop students. Will you be in the classroom?

PAMELA ALLEN returns to FIBREWORKS in October for two days of FUN!!
October 18-20, 2013

When you are sorting through your photographs and albums of online pictures of vacation venues or recalling special travel that has touched a place in your heart, do you think that you would like to preserve those special places in cloth? Pamela has the masters touch when it comes to "storytelling in cloth" and will lead you through the planning, inspiration and quick fire exercises that will take you into auto design mode in her two day workshop.

You need to collect a few special memories, make some notes, gather the stash fabrics that will help you tell your story and get ready for a rocking weekend of fun and stitch with Pam. With a long and well honed background in Fine Art and the innate ability to guide her students to the initial sketch phase and selection and cutting of fabric for your pictures in cloth, Pam is the perfect tutor for beginning a new series of fibre art. Details just seem to come to life when you have a great palette of fabrics and some great photos or a picture in your mind's eye that you want to bring to life in cloth.

Former students will attest to Pam's fun filled, lively and productive classroom inspiration, and you do not want to miss this opportunity to share the journey with other like-minded fibre artists. Come Play! Registration is open and a great fall weekend with friends is what will get your new series underway!

Preparing to WORK NEW for Fall 2013... what is inspiring your new work?

The trees are shedding leaves with all of the heat and the world around us is gearing up for fall. Whether you are creating new quilts, fibre art projects or taking your work in an all new direction, some inspiration and commitment are required. Gathering new fabrics, stocking in supplies and thinking seriously about your fall learning opportunities should all be on your end of summer agenda.

FIBREWORKS KINGSTON is all about inspiration and studying with the very best of the best Instructors we can bring to the classroom for your benefit and enjoyment. This year we have a line up that is sure to make your inventory of new techniques and skills with fabric, paint, paper and auxiliaries like discharge paste and disperse dyes inclusive and lots of fun!

As you gear up for creating new work this fall, whether for a series of new work or for a few small pieces that will stretch your creativity, working along with a group of like minded friends in a weekend workshops format can be inspiring and uplifting. Each of us has that need for support, encouragement and creative networking, and FIBREWORKS offers just that. It is also a terrific opportunity to make new friends in the fibre world and stretch your "opportunities" inventory through meeting new people with similar interests and sharing YOUR work along the way.

A few tips for getting started with all new "home-work" this fall appeared in ROBERT GENN's newsletter August 21st edition (and we hope you will go to the Robert Genn website and subscribe to his blog feed for inspiration with his twice weekly newsletter targeted to painters, but SO valuable to every artist):

From this week's Robert Genn Newsletter:

Speed, it seems, short-circuits the right brain to the (artist's) painter's hand. By not passing through the theoretical shoulds, coulds, and woulds of the left brain, the results are more likely to be "artistic."

For homework, we suggest our workshoppers, no matter what their personal styles, hang out with the "37 Club" every morning for a month and do a quickie 8" x 10" or 11" x 14". After all, some folks do yoga, or meditate, or they worship at the altar of Facebook. We can pretty well guarantee that the first few exercises will be disappointing, but many blockages will eventually fall away like blue jeans on a nudist beach. The big payoff is to be happier in your work.

Esoterica (great advice) : We recommend cutting up a pile of small primed panels (fibre backgrounds/bits and pieces). Once a day, take a panel off the deck, place it on your easel and squeeze out. Take a minute to "center yourself," and think ahead to what you want to do. Set your timer (a kitchen timer will do) to 37 minutes, breathe deeply and go for it. If you're not pleasantly surprised after a month, please consider chartered accountancy.

Back to FIBREWORKS: Ready to get started on a new season of creative work in fibre?

You will find the very most exciting inspiration and "quick start" playful exercises, tips and techniques from our two outstanding fall Guest Artists, PAMELA ALLEN, October 18-20th and KAREN GOETZINGER, November 15-17th at St. Lawrence College. Visit the artist pages and registration information on the sidebar here at the blog, or email Fibreworks Coordinator, Bethany Garner for your pdf copy of the FIBREWORKS 2013/14 Brochure: fibreworkskingston@gmail.com

Enjoy the rest of summer! See you in the fall...

FALL IS FAST APPROACHING... will you be in the classroom with our outstanding Instructors?

Hard to believe how fast the summer is fleeing now.. with shorter days and changes in the trees and grasses and subtle signs that fall is coming along sooner than we would like. Have you taken the Wolfe Island Ferry this summer, been downtown for Movie Night at Market Square? Walked the all new Princess Street and eaten in an outdoor patio café? Summer in Kingston is so very wonderful, and it all continues into fall. There is so much to see and do in YOUR town...have you recorded some of those favourite things in your new work??? Brought your favourite photos to life in fibre?

As you are doing some planning for your calendar, please have a look at the great workshop weekends that FIBREWORKS KINGSTON has planned for fall 2013 and the wonderful slate of  Instructors coming on board for you in spring 2014.

We start the fall with a two day workshop with the renowned PAMELA ALLEN - Townscapes and honestly, who can get you excited about creating all new work than our very own PAM!

Pam's workshop weekend October 18-20th includes a terrific Friday evening sharing of her quilts and stories and perhaps some slides....and all of the terrific art-focused information Pam always shares with her audience on developing your own design savvy and her approach to working. As a participant in QUILT NATIONAL 2013, Pam's work received exposure to an even wider international audience who are fascinated and amazed at her ability to bring a story to life in cloth and stitch.

For those of you who have a story, a place you love, a travel adventure or just an idea that needs to be shared, this two day workshop weekend will give you the opportunity to get that story down on paper and into "real time" design work with Pam as your guide and mentor along the way. Intuitive cutting and layering of fabrics from your stash, and hand and machine stitch await you as you design and create an original art quilt that tells YOUR personal story.

November 15-17th finds Karen Goetzinger of Ottawa in our classroom with her DYNAMIC COLOUR FOR FIBRE ARTISTS workshop weekend. Karen will take her students by leaps and bounds into the colour play game that is so challenging for many who work in fibre design and stitch. Creative play time with a master is what FIBREWORKS KINGSTON is all about.

Karen will use the workshop weekend to ease you into all new colour-play using some sketchbook exercises, focused exploration using provided colour aide papers, and on Sunday, a bit of painting and more as you travel  the road to a new confidence and perhaps the discovery of your "voice" in a preferred palette you will develop over this creative weekend with Karen.

Karen Goetzinger in situ

Making time for new work is a challenge for many of us, and there is no one better than Karen at sharing the discipline and focus we all need for creative studio work. Plan to join us. Just a few seats left in this weekend workshop.
Acquiescence, Karen Goetzinger

We are so excited to have CAROL SODERLUND of Geneva, NY, Workshop #3 - TRANSFORMATIONS and PENNY BERENS  of Granville Ferry, NS joining us  for Workshop #4, DESIGNING FROM NATURE and Workshop #5, MAKE IT YOUR OWN WITH DISCHARGE in the spring of 2014.

AND, MORE EXCITING NEWS....

A series of related one and two day workshops will be announced here on the blog that are sponsored by FIBREWORKS throughout the year and are separate from the FIBREWORKS KINGSTON  Weekend Workshops Series. These workshops will be instructed by area artists and craftspersons and designed to excite the participants and support the inventory of techniques participants are able to add to their skills and interest inventory. The workshops may also be designed as "PLAY DATES" to gather friends and share time for working together in a no stress, playful learning environment where friends learn from friends and there is room to spread out and enjoy time together.

Announcements of these play dates will be made here, so register to receive the posts in YOUR mailbox as soon as a new post is up for your information.

We will also share news of local events, exhibitions and meetings of interest for fibre arts enthusiasts in Eastern Ontario. Please tune in for more information.
Hoping to see many of you participating in our Weekend Workshops Series this next year and to be able to meet you as we are all out and about in the community sharing in the exciting world of Fibre ART.

Happy Summer!
